It was probably last summer when my best friend started strongly suggesting we get a trip on the books for my 40th Birthday in February. “We can’t just let it come and go without doing anything. You’re turning 40!” she’d say. We cleared our schedules for a long weekend adventure and then… I just couldn’t commit. Where to go? Who could come? Would I want to be away from my hubby and family on my actual 40th bday? I drug my feet and it wasn’t until the beginning of my birth month (and after my miscarriage) before I could get serious about getting something booked. I dreamed of lounging by a pool, a turquoise water view and some lovely R&R with yummy food. Florida was filled to the brim this time of year and all our favorite resorts were either booked or only available at an exorbitant price. Then we noticed that fights to Puerto Rico from Tampa were crazy affordable and resorts weren’t nearly as expensive. We could fly to PR and stay a few nights at a lovely resort for less than booking a place in Florida. And it checked all of my boxes. Plus we ended up doing a mid week trip that got us back on the Saturday of my actual birthday. Which mean’t I could celebrate the day with the hubs and my family. We were in!
Long weekend in London BFF Trip — London Fine Art Film Photography
Last April my best friend and I slipped quietly away to London for a long weekend. I didn’t post a single photo on social media. Somehow our closest friends didn’t even seem to know. We didn’t mean for it to be so secretive. We just literally picked a spot with cheaper(er) flights (right at $400), less than 8 hours away and plenty of good food options (the later being the most important) booked the trip, packed our bags (and cameras) and were off. Despite the perceived idea that woman (and right brain thinkers) should be able to multi-task I simply can’t. If I’m enjoying a moment it feels like a complete departure (and entirely impossible) to step away and post something on social media (or text or call or do anything else conversational related). So on each trip I take I either choose to take an hour or two at the end of the day to recap or take that hour or two to get some more sleep. With only three packed days, sleep won out on this trip. We spent our days wandering about and eating our way through a city that was much more sprawling than I thought. It was a delight and I came home with a handful of rolls of film, a single antique letterpress drawer as a souvenir and the memory of so many delightful sights and tasty foods to treasure.
Israel — Fine Art Film Holy Land Travel Photography
My mom and my brother just texted to say they’d landed in Tel Aviv. Their 10 day Holy Land adventure begins today. My heart is one part ecstatic for the experiences they are about to partake in and one part aching that I am not there by their side for it all. Israel is like nothing else. I learned this when I journeyed there with the Great Commission Bible Institute in the spring of 2018 and I pray all will line up for me to go back again someday. But for now I have my notes and photos from my own Christian pilgrimage in the Holy Land just a year and a half ago. I traipsed across the foreign landscape carrying three cameras (a DSLR, a medium format Contax 645 and my iPhone 10) aching to tell the story I saw before my eyes. I came back with a card full of images and a bag full of film exposed in the warm light of a place I now knew and longed for return. These photos are like treasures to me. Which reminded me that I had never officially shared the images from that experience (other than the occasional Instagram post, that one Heartland Living Magazine article feature and my Fine Art Holy Land Print Shop I opened up last fall). So now is the time. Below you’ll find a glimpse and a bit of a description and back story here and there. Enjoy the adventure!
A Miami Family Vacation — Key Biscayne Miami Photography — Silver Sands Beach Resort
If you follow me on Instagram you may have gathered that my family stole away to Miami for the weekend to celebrate my mom's 60th birthday (I don't know what may have clued you in, maybe it was the 30+ images I posted over the course of 4 days). I just can't help it! Miami is such a visually appealing city and then you get my gorgeous family up in the mix and it is a recipe for photo overload. Plus my sister calls this place her home so we have a insta-tourguide for places like Vizcaya, South Beach, Coconut Grove, Wynwood and finding the best food. (Side note: Because my sis lives in Miami I have no travel fees for wedding photography in the area. Yay for Miami weddings!)
We opted to stay a hop skip and away from all the hustle and bustle on the island of Key Biscayne and found ourselves the quaintest of retro Miami places, Silver Sands Beach Resort. If you are looking for Miami luxury, glitz and glam this is NOT the place but if you want to step back in time and experience a little bit of vintage low-key Miami this is DEFINITELY your place. It was just perfect for what we were looking for for the weekend. And as an artist it was a dream… the retro feel, the swaying palms, the vintage architectural details, those aqua doors! All weekend long I plotted and planned for the photo session I had worked out to do with my 13 year old niece for a photo class I was teaching. I wanted to walk my class through how I go about a photo session and this place was the perfect setting, put a gorgeous gal up in the mix and voila… photo loveliness. But… as many photo shoots go things didn't go as planned… when we actually got around the the session the 13 year old wasn't up for it (oh the temperamental-ness of being 13). Luckily I have a 19 month old model of a nephew that is always up for photos (or rather, allowing me to chase around after him with my camera while we try to keep him as happy as possible.) And to top it all off I got myself a great teaching lesson for my photo class where I was able to talk through finding light, making compositional decisions, working through challenges, being present in the moment and telling a compelling visual story all along the way in a real life setting. Win!
Here is a glimpse into a low key morning of Miami fun! And to find out more about how I capture these type of images join me for my next This is the Day Photo Workshop or Highlands Art League class. Enjoy!
xoxo, Caroline
