My last “normal” wedding of 2020 was spent with these two and 250 of their nearest and dearest. What a joyous day it was! Can’t wait for a little more of this come this fall. Fingers crossed. 🤍

Oh to have more and more people in front of my camera again. Can’t wait to be back in the normal rhythms of celebrating the beauty of “us” again with my camera in hand. 🤍

I thought about posting a bunch of my favorite nature photos in my stories (and honestly still may) but if anything else I’ve finally put together an obnoxiously long blog of film photos from our trip out west last fall with some of the most breathtaking, sweeping vistas I’ve ever seen. I’ll be showing you all some more Puerto Rico and general travel photo treats later but for now I needed to remind you that, yes, I do still photograph people, though it seems like a lifetime ago when I last had a normal photoshoot. Yet was it really just over a month ago when we were sneaking in this engagement session with Megan and Matt visiting some of Highlands County’s prettiest spots (including a dreamy state park, a golden field, an orange grove in bloom and a lakeside sunset stop) before the “stay at home” orders set in? I can’t wait to be back to this soon. Because if there is one thing I’ve noticed over this past month and a half it’s that life hasn’t stopped moving forward in joyous, momentous ways. Of folks near and dear to me I can count at least five engagements, three impromptu weddings and a handful of little ones being welcomed into the world amidst the chaos of a pandemic. Though our world may be forever altered by this time our love presses forward resilient and unchanged. And while the timing has shifted and the settings may look different we have so many reasons to celebrate. I can’t wait to capture a little more of that again soon! 🤍

{ Words } These days I want so badly just to post pretty pictures but where I find myself struggling is finding the words. There are so many and so few all at once. @therabbitroom wrote a little bit about this creative struggle this week which you can check out on their blog. They took the words I couldn’t find right out of my mouth. 😊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s a weird world, forever altered by these times. And things are surely happening deep in the souls of us all, felt but unseen. Art is in the making, deep down, stirring, waiting, unfinished and undone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve found myself reflecting more than anything these days. To see the things that were missed back when life felt... normal. Today while stuck at home my heart aches to travel and yet my very own memory holds visions of gorgeous landscapes and beautiful people from across the globe. I’ve been blogging my past adventures and compiling those images into mini books I now treasure on my shelf. I’m currently working on a little video recapping our trip out west last fall and it’s as if I’m on the adventure all over again. It’s a big, deep breath of fresh air from inside my 74 degree air conditioned home on a muggy Florida day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So today I as I struggle to find what seems like the right words, I’ll share this photo from my birthday trip to Puerto Rico earlier this year. Vicariously living through my 2019 travel photos these days... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was one of our very first “oooo, pull over on the side of the road” photo stops on the way into Zion National Park, The Checkerboard Mesa, and I was immediately smitten. 🤍

2020 began with so many hopes held lightly. Can we even remember those days? I took a weekend away with a sweet friend to dream and plan and breathe by the sea. But all I could think about was the baby growing inside me. When we first arrived I thought to myself, “this is your first trip to the sea little one.” I thought there would be many. The trip involved little actual actionable planning on my end (I blame the pregnancy brain). But the life giving conversation flowed freely as it usually does in the presence of said friend. We sat and talked about her own unexpected journey to parenthood, her two precious children carried in the womb of other women, the four she carried herself for a time that were called home to Jesus too early it seemed. The fragility of it all weighed upon me. No matter how many specialists we see, diet changes we make, yoga poses we do it’s Jesus that makes that call. Like the mystery of the vast ocean before us and inside us, the push and pull of the tides, the treasures it gifts at its shores. We journey here and dip our toes in its cool embrace, this ever moving sliver of a foamy line in the sand. We stare hazy eyed at something beyond what’s before us and breathe it in. I’d go here again and again and again to stand in awe in the familiar unknown just to know how small I am, how big He is and how the amount of trips we’ll take to the shore—for ourselves or the babies we’ll carry there—are numbered and known only by our Savior Jesus. What a comforting reminder these days and everyday that we don’t have to know the answers or the reason or the plan. We don’t have to know tomorrow when we know Jesus today. 🤍

I am a sentimental person. I tear up at every wedding I photograph at some point. Yep, every single one. But I try to keep it on the down low. Eyes blurred with tears could say to people that I am not doing my job, but to me fully cherishing the moment means that I am.

I find it to be the most painful thing ever to turn down the invitation for adventure. Thus, I rarely if ever do.

Jesus is my main man. And like my man, I believe the greatest of all things is love.

I am a master of graphic design. I even have the MGD diploma from NC State to prove it. And I sometimes request that certain people refer to me as "master". Sometimes.

I love people and especially love their stories. I have dreams of traveling the world one day collecting these stories in my heart (and maybe with my camera and pen too).

My dad and I have regular on going epic staring contests across dinner tables. I normally win.
My dad has been gone for two years now and I miss him, his heart, his hugs and these epic staring contests more than words can express.

I play the piano and the ukulele (in order of skill). Mostly while worshiping in my home. On the occasion in public. Always while singing. And preferably with others by my side.

I decided it was my destiny to become an artist when I won an honorable mention in an art contest in kindergarten. I now lovingly judge art contests for kindergarteners.

Traveling and seeing new places fuels my soul. Missions work and meeting new and beautiful people fuels my heart. And there is a little town in Mexico called La Mision with a handfull of little people that have a piece of that heart.

I despise getting up before the sun. Even for a day at Disney World, which I truly believe is the happiest place on earth. Yes, even for that. I will, however, get up before the sun for a beautiful experience, a breathtaking sunrise, the Disney Princess Half Marathon and the occasional early morning photo shoot. But please bring coffee. Preferably with sugar and cream.

I love hearts. And have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to artwork, wearables and household items involving them. I will gladly accept anything from this board that anyone would like to buy for me.

I am a youth group leader to an awesome group of high school girls who on the absent-minded occasion get access to my phone and post pictures of themselves (a.k.a. the selfie) onto my instagram completely messing up my grid. I forgive them.

I laugh when people fall, or trip, or drop a whole pile of things or hurt themselves in some minor way. I never find major injuries or matters of a hurting heart humorous, but someone else's stubbed toe cracks me up every single time. Some might say, this is a problem.

It doesn't matter how stressed, or busy, or emotionally drained or frustrated or frantic I am on any particular day, when I arrive at a shoot out in God's glorious creation with some of His beloved children all else fades away. Every time. And it feels a bit like how I imagine heaven will feel.

I love what I do. It brings tears to these sentimental eyes when I stand in His creation, or when I get to hear and tell someone's story, or when I get to marvel at what we captured together.

I am truly blessed.

After achieving my Bachelors in Studio Art from Florida State University where I focused on Design and Photography, I practiced in the field of design for six years before returning to school for my Masters in Graphic Design from North Carolina State University in 2010. It was through this journey and in my educational experience that I honed my artistic craft and developed a "way of seeing" that fuels my photography today. No genres, no specialties, no studio full of props. Just photographing what I love in an artful and imaginative way. It is not about the camera or the lens or the hand that presses the shutter.
